Water Garden
A water garden is usually a small to medium sized pond
that is maintained by the owner of the property. Most have plenty of
water loving plants such as lily pads and bamboo. They are usually surrounded
by grasses and flowers to create a very natural looking but beautiful
effect. Often the pond is stocked with fish, usually gold fish or koi.
A water garden can be very easy to maintain if done regularly. If the
pond has a pump it can usually hold more fish and support more plant
life but the filters have to be cleaned and the mechanical pieces occasionally
repaired. A pond with stagnant water has to be cleaned by hand with
a net and brush, and algae build up can become a problem. In extreme
cases algae will kill everything in the pond, including fish.
One way to keep a water garden clean with out a pump is to stock it
with plants that live underwater and oxygenate the water. Combined with
filter fish that suck clean any surface they can attach themselves to
and the pond will be self sustaining, at least to a point. A pump also
has to be used for water features such as fountains and waterfalls.
