Garden Bird Feeders

Garden bird feeders come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles depending on the type of bird that is preferred to attract. A small globe or upturned jar with a small bird rest, or none at all is designed to attract hummingbirds, the smallest bird of all, but considered by some to be the most beautiful. These are often filled with a mixture of sugar and nutrients dissolved in water and the feeder is brightly colored to mimic a flower.

Other garden bird feeders are designed to attract a variety of birds. These should be large enough for a few birds to feed at the same time. Some are big enough for dozens of sparrows and other similarly sized birds to feed at the same time. A good feeder allows the owner to see when the seeds are low so they can be refilled, and should be easy to refill without taking it off of its branch or stand. Hummingbird feeders are becoming very popular. Just make sure you purchase the correct type of nectar.

Any garden bird feeder has the ability to attract more than just birds. Squirrels are notorious for breaking into bird feeders and stealing all the seeds. There are many different designs for preventing squirrels from pirating the feeder, most of them involve some sort of top piece that prevents the animal from climbing down on top of the feeder. Keeping it far enough away from branches so it cannot jump onto it is also advised.
